The Power of a Thank You

For those days when you wonder if the sacrifice is worth it.

For those moments when the burden seems too heavy to bear.

For those hours when you ask yourself if anyone knows the loneliness that comes with leadership.

For those late nights and early mornings where you give up sleep to answer a call or meet for a heart-to-heart lament.

For all these moments and more that come with pouring your life into others - Thank You.

Far too often we never get to hear those two words of appreciation...BUT when you do, when you hear the OTHER side of the story - the sacrifice, the hours, the burdens, the tears - they all come into focus and you realize:

It WAS worth it

And You never once carried that burden or sacrifice alone...for He lifted your shoulders and wiped your tears, and gave you strength, and listened to your bleeding heart.

And He is now allowing you to see the other side - the Thank You’s, the stories, the words of memory, the transformed lives.

And it is worth it!

****Last night Josh and I were surprised with a thank you party for our 10 years of serving as college and young adult pastors.  It was such a joy to see the faces of many who had come into our lives through this ministry.

And late into last night we read together the words of thanks that these young men and women had penned.  And those words - those precious thank you’s - were like balm to my soul.

As I read aloud their sentiments I was flooded back with the many memories I had over the years...

...of my insecurities, wondering if I was making any sort of lasting impact

...of the sometimes tears that I would shed over their stories - feeling that I in no way could really  give the guidance or hope that was needed

...of the frustrations I felt because I was not seeing what Christian culture tells us equals success (big crowds and flashy lights)

...of the laughter, so much laughter, that I had shared with these beautiful young people

...of the ways I’ve been changed by them

And this morning as I sit outside reminiscing and giving my own thanks to God, I realize that there really is no end to this call we all have to make an impact - I will continue to try to do so in whatever capacity I’m given.

And in no way does my journey end with those hundreds of amazing young men and women - for even this morning I couldn’t help but go read the Thank You’s that Paul once wrote and I found myself praying these words over their lives:

“So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well...Live a lover’s life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God.”   - Philippians 1:9-11

**Perhaps you should go tell someone in your life Thank You today - those two words have power.

Corn Dogs and Funky Freezer Girls

Our church has an annual fundraiser for our youth and college ministries. It’s not a car wash or garage sale…it’s not even selling candles or candy bars – nope, we sell corn dogs at the South Plains Fair! I feel as though I should follow-up that sentence with a yeehaw! I’m not sure what comes to your mind when you think of a corn dog booth at a local fair, but let me just tell you that words cannot describe this experience. It is hot and greasy and lines are long (people in Lubbock really like greasy corn dogs), and yet it is also fun in a crazy-I-can’t-believe-I-spent-12-hours-selling-corn-dogs-today kind of way. And yes, I did in fact sell corn dogs for 12 hours yesterday!

One day a year, Josh and I are in charge of the stand and yesterday was that fateful day. In fact, as I sit and type I should tell you that my right index finger is numb from using tongs to pull corndogs from the fryer, and I can still smell the remnants of grease in my hair…oh the things we do to raise money for the kids we love!

I thought you should get a glimpse into my grease-filled 12-hour day of fun!

This is a short line

Kyla painting a corndog - we literally paint mustard on the corndogs.
Mindy Morse showing off her selling skills
Studhubs unloading boxes of weiners...there is no way to make that sound proper.

My goal for this picture was to show you just how many people we cram into a tiny hot box...you can't tell, but most of the night the answer to that question was 6

After surviving my 12-hour shift in the corn dog stand, I must tell you that I am ever grateful for a new venture – Funky Freezer Girls! Like the name? All credit goes to my sister Leslie for putting this group together – after reading about a group on facebook with the same name. It is simple.

My sister asked 6 friends with families similar in size if they would each want to make 2 meals 8 times and then freeze them. It’s a version of batch-cooking…only it’s not. We realized that if we each just made a large amount of 2 meals we would save a lot of time & then we could share with one another!

For example, I made 8 servings of Chicken Enchiladas & Barbeque Chicken Pizzas!  Here is a glimpse into my day of cooking

Notice that I did have a little help...in fact, in order to keep Selah occupied while I made this large quantity of food - I told her that she could cook too & I let her get out anything she needed for this endeavor...

So, this is what my kitchen looked like at the end of our afternoon of cooking - oh my!

But, I decided it was all worth it because after cooking, my freezer looks like this!

And on days like today when my finger is numb and recovering from greas-infested hair, it sure is nice to pull out the lasagna made my Kacey & know my family will have a yummy dinner!
What I especially love is that we each made an extra helping of our meals and are giving them to Maggie (Abby’s sister) who can use the extra help right now as her sweet baby girl has been in and out of the hospital a lot this year. Speaking of – you should go check out Brynne Smiles!  And perhaps you should start your own Funky Freezer Girls!

Going to the Mountains

I'm taking off tomorrow at noon with 26 amazing young women for our annual ZOE Girls Retreat!  In the past, we've made some amazing memories...and there is nothing quite like getting away for a weekend!  Here are a few of my favorite moments from past year's retreats

Snowball fight?  Just enough snow for one good toss!

Love our shirts?  Yes, we do original shirts for every retreat - they are a highlight...and wait til you see this year's!
Can you believe I'm related to all of these AMAZING ladies?

What's more fun than finding an old VW van?  I'm not sure if I can think of anything!  Woohoo - pile in and take pictures!

Girls listening as the boys serenade

Here is what I'm looking forward to...ah, doesn't that just look relaxing and gorgeous?

Here is what I'm going to miss...look at this face!

Glimpses

Some days it's as if the Lord gives you a glimpse - a reminder of why you do just exactly what you do.  These reminders are different for everyone - I'm sure parents get these glimpses when they find their hands grasped by a child...or for my husband I know it happens occasionally when a client tears up upon entering their new home.  We all get those glimpses from time to time - but sometimes...I don't know about you...but sometimes it feels like the work is more overwhelming than the reminders that it is worth it.

I feel that way working at the church quite often - don't get me wrong - I LOVE my job - I would do it for free...it is not a job but my passion...and a huge part of simply who I am.  There are many aspects to my work at the church - missions...teaching...administration...and plenty of listening.

But yesterday was a day full of glimpses in one specific area - zoe - a ministry to college students & young adults that Josh and I have overseen now for 7 years.  In all honesty we've had our ups and downs - I've had young people cuss me out...I've cried over giving counsel that was swiftly ignored only to see the pain in young women's eys...we've tried to quit at least 4 times (literally - gone in and said we would like to be done)...we've seen numbers fluctuate...and we've questioned why God keeps us there.

And yet, we've had some of our greatest joys from working with young people as well.  Performing weddings...countless talks over coffee...6am girls' groups that I've led for years...pre-marital counseling...lots of laughter...sharing tears...but mostly seeing these young men and women fall more in love with Jesus.  So there are moments when we love it...there are glimpses of why this is His purpose...

Lately, I've been distanced from the hands-on conversations with girls that normally give me the glimpses into why I love zoe.  Mostly because of my pregnancy & choosing to say no to things like my 6am small group & other commitments in this season.  I've missed it...and the distance was causing me to question once again..."Are you sure God?  You want us to continue to give our lives here?"

So yesterday was His ever-faithful reminder that although my life may be changing there is still so much to give.  My glimpses included coffee with a young woman who after drifting for a bit is renewing her deep relationship with the Lord...and then an unexpected email from a woman who was in our group 4 years ago & is now married & living in a different city.  Her short message included these words, "I had forgotten what sweet memories I have from my time spent with you and the girls. I started thinking back about how much I grew during that time, and I just wanted to thank you for all the time you poured into me...you helped make me a better person, and my time in Zoe changed my life in so many ways!"

And then...perhaps my greatest glimpse of all occured at our weekly zoe service where we had a night of worship & communion.  At one point I just stopped singing & looked around the room.  Before me were over 80 young people - some standing...some kneeling...some sitting...some crying...some quiet...some singing...all worshipping...and giving adoration to Him.  In that moment, I quietly said thank you to the Lord.

Thank you for not allowing us to quit.
Thank you for giving me a place to share myself.
Thank you for giving me words or tears or laughter or empathy when I haven't known what to say.
Thank you for choosing me to love these people.
And Thank you for the love I've received from them.

It was a good day...and a good reminder that whatever He calls us to do - it is worth it.

And by the way, we had a "love" theme to our night of worship last night.  In the middle of singing Elizabeth Brown read a spoken word piece that she wrote that brought tears to my eyes.  You should read it... http://half-bakedwords.blogspot.com/

And I pray that you feel His love this weekend and that you feel a renewed love for where He has you.

Babies, Squirrels, Chocolate, & Musings of the MInd

I feel as though I have so many random things to say...so here goes

1. I saw a squirrel electrocuted yesterday. He was hanging from the electrical lines in our backyard, and as much as I was repulsed I was equally intrigued. In fact, I thought about this little squirrel off and on all day! Leslie even dressed Molly Kate in a squirrel shirt yesterday and I thought - poor electrocuted squirrel...i think I'll take a picture of him when I get home. (I know - I'm a little morbid like that)

2. I didn't get to take a picture of the squirrel because of the craziness that is Lubbock's weather. Seriously, did anyone else think for a brief moment that they might be blown away or sucked into the dark brown sky? As I drove yesterday afternoon I repeated to myself, "I love Lubbock...I love Lubbock..." I do this on occasions such as yesterday when I dream of living in a place where the sky does not suddenly turn brown.

3. Josh just asked me, "Can you imagine being really sick and having to run out to the outhouse in the cold? I'm so thankful for our bathroom..." Sorry for the TMI - but thought I should share a glimpse into they mind of my ever-optimistic yet random husband.

4. I took Molly Kate's pictures this past weekend, and although she is beautiful, I decided that I"m not a very good children's photographer...Here are my favorite pics, but I think I'm more of a capture the moment photographer.

5. Had our Secret Sister party at my house on Saturday - it was fun! I love the girls in our little group.

Katie, Kayli, Lauren, & Me - not sure why I'm hunching...

I cooked - made some mini quiches that were delicious, a yummy salad & coffee cake

I gave all the girls mittens or gloves to stay warm!

6. Hannah & Jay Reed are my heroes. Today they went with me to Sam's to purchase all our food for the zoe ski trip. Not only did they push 3 flat beds heavy laden with food all over that store, but they then helped load & unload all of that food in the frigid windy weather!

7. Chocolate Therapy last night was super fun! Really, I think it was one of COTR's more successful women's nights - it was fun, genuinely relaxing and the ladies seemed to connect well with other ladies! Good job to everyone who made is fabulous!

8. So, we will be leaving tomorrow night at midnight for our annual zoe ski trip! I'm excited - I LOVE Crested Butte & I enjoy skiing. Mostly, this trip often lends itself to the best time for relationship building amongst our students and young adults so pray for us that it goes well. If you think about me - pray for me that I can just be in the moment with students...it is so easy for me when I'm in charge of things like this to get caught up in the details - the cooking, ski rentals, room issues, etc...that I can miss out on the moments of chatting over hot chocolate or playing cards by the fire. I want to make the most of my time with our students so pray that I relax and dive into other's lives...maybe even let some jump into my own life.
