The Season of Lent

So, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and I'm going to embark on something I've never done before. I'm going to observe the season of lent. I've half-heartedly somewhat fasted before over the course of the season, but it was always where I would hear about someone else doing it (about a week into Lent) and decide that sounded like a good idea and then go for it myself.

But this summer as I read the book "Girl Meets God" the Lord really opened my eyes to the fact that it would be good for our relationship if I sought Him in ways that were a bit uncomfortable for me. I'm really comfortable in my charismatic/evangelical/relational type of Christianity, but I have never really been around the Christian stream that follows the liturgy or practices such things as Lent. I realized that it is almost second nature to praise Him and seek Him in my own ways - so much so that at times I can do the motions but totally check out with my heart and mind. So, I'm going to seek Him and prepare my heart for Easter in a way that definitely is not second nature...I'm hoping to learn something along the way.

I am supposed to take my grandmother to the doctor tomorrow at 12:30pm...but if it doesn't happen I am going to try to go to a service with the imposition of ashes. That is a big step for me, but I'm so excited...I will keep you posted...

I'm also praying about what I should fast...would love to know if anyone else will be fasting during Lent!

I too am thinking of giving something up for Lent. In our Methodist days, I did almost every year, each year choosing something I truly loved a little too much. A sacrifice if you will. The year I gave up sweets stands out. ha! I was always amazed at the supernatural power God gave to resist a temptation and power prayer times in a "struggle" of wanting to give in. Blessings, sweet Friend.

Paige, you amaze me! I love reading your blogs and seeing the depth of your relationship with God.

Every Lent, as a Catholic I don't eat meat on Fridays and "give up" something that I like. One year it was sweets, that was VERY hard to do. Another year it was shopping for anything outside of basic needs. Another year, rather than giving something up I attempted to "do" something out of my comfort zone, which was the hardest thing for me to do. As for this year...I'm not sure what yet, and obviously need to make a decision quickly. Hee hee.

Anyway, sorry to blabber on. Good luck deciding on what to give up and I look forward to reading more about your journey through Lent.

WOW! It really shocks and amazes me how absolutely different the cultures of Lubbock and CS are! I actually did not put together that it was Lent...because I'm not surrounded by my hundreds of Catholic friends....I know this is NOT the point of the blog...I will however, be highly distracted the rest of the day by this culture phenomenon.

Can't wait for the posts to come...I will not be participating in the season, for the same reason I cannot own a venus razor...

And I pray that you WILL have brand new revelations of God in your life during this time...

Wow....as always, I'm impressed by your "new" whatever revelation. I would love to participate in Lent but don't really know much...I will take that rabbit trail and find out what I want to know...who knows....getting out of the box might actually be a good thing for me.
